How Long Should a Canoe Paddle Be?

The ideal canoe paddle length generally falls between 48 to 60 inches, depending on your height, paddling style, and the type of water you’re navigating. Choosing the right length is key for a comfortable and efficient paddling experience. Here’s a guide to help you select the best paddle size for your needs.

1. Measure Your Torso

One effective way to determine paddle length is by measuring your torso. To do this:

  • Sit up straight on a chair, and measure the distance from the top of your head to your seat.
  • As a rule, a paddle that reaches your chin or nose when held vertically is usually a good fit.

2. Consider Paddle Type

Different paddling styles and conditions may benefit from specific paddle types and lengths:

  • Beaver Tail Paddle: Ideal for deep water, with a generally longer length for smooth, efficient strokes.
  • Otter Tail Paddle: Great for deep water with long strokes, usually in the medium to long range.
  • Square-Tip Paddle: Often shorter, making it easy to maneuver in shallow water.

3. Paddle Length by Paddler Height

To simplify, here’s a quick reference based on your height:

  • Under 5’5” (165 cm): 48–52 inches
  • 5’5”–5’11” (165–180 cm): 52–56 inches
  • 6’0” and Above (180 cm+): 56–60 inches

4. Test It Out

If possible, try the paddle on the water to ensure comfort. Your paddle should allow full blade submersion without overextending your arms or shoulders.
